Todd Quinn

Early in Todd’s software development career he created innovative cyclic redudancy check based testing algorithms for effective fault diagnostics and isolation.

He was the lead software developer for an advanced research and development project focused on applying artificial intelligence techniques to diagnosing failures in complex systems.

For over ten years he applied his Lisp software development expertise to various artificial intelligence research and development projects both at Hughes Aircraft and at the NASA Glenn Research Center. He enhanced system diagnostic capabilities by subjecting key data sets to linear regression analysis in order to detect incipient fault conditions before they actually occurred. He also worked on innovative model-driven approaches to autonomous diagnostics.

Todd designed and implemented software that greatly simplified control of a high burst rate microwave switch matrix aboard NASA’s Advanced Communication Technology Satellite, by replacing a tedious error prone manual process, with a well designed user interface that was capable of transforming conceptually meaningful settings into a hexadecimal file that was understandable to the communications equipment, and uploading it to the satelline in a matter of minutes.

He also developed a new data acquisition and control system for NASA Glenn Antenna Laboratory and Test Facility. The previous system, developed in the 1970’s, was written in FORTRAN and had to be continually updated as obsolete facility equipment was being replaced. Todd's new control system was subtantially more modern. It's user interface was implemented in Smalltalk, it's equipment control modules were implemented in C, and it was sufficiently flexible and configurable to make it possible for facility operators to concentrate on their equipment installation and setup duties, and allow antenna systems principal investigators to set parameters and record their own data without the continual presence of facility operators.

In the evenings, at the local community college, Todd taught a variety software development courses. Every spring semester the Java class he was teaching was allways filled. He taught classes focused on Visual Basic, C/C++, and Database Design. For his Java and Advanced Visual Basic classes, Todd selected textbooks and decided which topics to cover. He had complete autonomy. He also taught an after-hours Java class for Lockheed Martin employees and promoted the use of Java throughout the organization.
